Dividing Mixed Numbers

When dividing mixed numbers, there are many fraction skill being used.  A student must be comfortable with these skills before moving on.  Read on to find out exactly what these are.

Fraction Skills Required before proceeding

Your child must be comfortable with each of these skills.  If they are not, please don't move forward until they have them mastered.  It will just cause a lot of stress and anxiety for both of you.

  1. Know exactly what a Mixed Number is.
  2. Dividing Fractions competency
  3. Converting mixed numbers to improper fractions
  4. Finding a Common Denominator.

Once you are confident your kid can manage these skills it's time to move on to dividing mixed numbers.

Dividing mixed number problem.

Represent mixed numbers as improper fractions using the denominator of their attached fractions.

Tidy up by adding what you can - you are now simply dividing fractions

Remember - to divide by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its inverse!

If your result is an improper fraction, rewrite it as a mixed number, to put it in it's smallest terms.

As you can see, dividing mixed numbers is not so difficult, but if your kid doesn't have a grasp of the individual skills dealing with different kinds of fractions, they will not be able to do this.
